A headline in today’s Pensacola News Journal caught our attention: “Fish pulls woman off pier.” Patricia Tenuto was fishing with her husband on a fishing pier in Pensacola Beach. Her husband had hooked a large redfish, and as she was trying to grab the fish with a net, she was pulled off the pier and fell 20 feet into the ocean. She explains, “The fish was in the net, almost to the pier, and it had a burst of energy. And it pulled me in with it.” Patricia was brought to shore by lifeguards, and except for a few scratches, she was uninjured. The best part of the story: the fish got away!

There was another story with an interesting twist in the Gainesville Sun this week. On Tuesday, the driver of a truck loaded with chickens took a curve on Hamilton County Road 249 too quickly and the truck overturned. Several crates broke open in the crash and dozens of birds escaped. Sadly, many chickens who were still confined in crates were loaded onto another truck to resume the trip to the Pilgrim’s Pride slaughterhouse in Live Oak.

Unfortunately, animals don’t often have a chance to rescue themselves. They need your help. A vegetarian/vegan diet saves the lives of fish, chickens and other animals every day! Contact ARFF for ideas on how to make the change to a healthier, animal-free lifestyle.
