Quotes of the week

- “It’s a raw, raw smell, very unique. If you’ve ever smelled death, it’s close to that.”
Those were the words of Lake County resident Art Dorion explaining the smell of a slaughterhouse in Monday’s Daily Commercial newspaper. Mr. Dorion is opposed to the construction of a slaughterhouse down the street from his home. The Lake County Commission will discuss the proposed slaughterhouse at their October 26 meeting. It’s completely understandable not to want to live next to a slaughterhouse, although Mr. Dorion and his neighbors would have a more convincing argument if they were all vegetarian.
- “It was a good customer of mine. His wife wanted something for the wall.”
The words of Capt. John Krohn, who operates a sport-fishing boat at Salfish Marina in Palm Beach Shores. Capt. Krohn was responding to criticism after a couple vacationing from Pennsylvania hired him to help them kill a nine-foot, female hammerhead shark. Krohn told the Sun-Sentinel that after the shark was hooked, she “fought for about an hour before dying.” The newspaper also spoke to a local conservationist who asked the very good question, “What would compel someone to kill this beautiful… animal for absolutely no good reason?”
- “It’s essential people keep in mind that mice are not people”
William Thies, Chief Scientific Officer at the Alzheimer’s Association, said these revealing words in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times. Thies’ point was that we should not expect too much from research using animals. The paper explained, “Researchers have alleviated Alzheimer’s-like symptoms in mice several times over, only to learn that the same treatment did not work in humans.”
What these three quotes have in common is that they make for great opportunities to spread animal-friendly messages by writing letters to the editor. Please contact ARFF for tips on how to take advantage of your local paper’s letters page to spread pro-animal messages.
