It started with Tofurky. Several years ago, news media began reporting about the strange “tofu turkey” that vegetarians placed at the center of their Thanksgiving dinner table. Every year since then, there have been regular news stories about being vegetarian or vegan at Thanksgiving. The stories this year are more evidence that vegetarians/vegans need not be left out of the traditional meal.

turkey2.jpgLast week, the New York Times listed on their website over 50 recipes for veggie Thanksgiving dishes. This week, The Washington Post wrote about how vegans celebrate the holiday. The article featured “Victor,” a turkey who was rescued by a sanctuary in Maryland and found himself, “eating Thanksgiving dinner instead of being Thanksgiving dinner.” A report on CNN provided advice for a meat-eating host who is expecting a vegetarian or vegan guest for the holiday. They noted that mashed potatoes, stuffing and other sides, “are inevitably the best part of the Thanksgiving meal,” and these dishes can easily be made vegan.

Closer to home, on Wednesday a Palm Beach Post wine reviewer wrote about pairing wine with vegan Thanksgiving entrees. Broward Palm Beach New Times reviewed five South Florida restaurants where people can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. Four of the restaurants are serving dead birds. The fifth restaurant the paper reviewed was Sublime in Fort Lauderdale! Sublime’s special holiday menu includes Gardein “Turkey,” Roasted Acorn Squash filled with quinoa stuffing, Pumpkin “Cheesecake” and more (make reservations here).

ARFF wishes you a successful turkey-free Thanksgiving!
