Animal cruelty is only the beginning of dogfighter’s crime

Animal shelters are often called-upon to deal with injured and abused animals when police bust up dogfighting rings. Dog’s wounds are treated, and as the criminal case winds its way through the courts, shelters absorb the cost of caring for the animals. But the cost of room & board is not the only concern for shelter directors. Today’s Gainesville Sun reported a break-in at the Alachua County Animal Services shelter. Six pit bulls, who were among a group of 11 dogs confiscated a few weeks ago as part of an investigation into dogfighting, were removed from the building Monday night.
Of course, the dogfighters who most likely stole the animals are concerned not about the animals themselves, but their value as fighters (thousands of dollars are bet on illegal dog fights).
Fortunately, police said they do have a suspect in the break-in.
