Sheriff promotes animal abuse
October 17th, 2006 by admin
This weekend in Indiantown, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office will host a rodeo to benefit the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches. This is the second year of the sheriff’s rodeo; last year’s event was promoted as Martin County’s first rodeo in 20 years.
A Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman told The Stuart News, “This is great family fun and parents will appreciate the safe atmosphere for the kids.” Kids may be safe in the arena, but the rodeo is far from being harmless. Events at the rodeo, such as steer wrestling and tie-down roping, are violent activities. Rodeo events trivialize the suffering of animals, and teach a dangerous lesson to impressionable children. Child psychologists warn that watching animals being hit, prodded, injured, and humiliated for entertainment desensitizes children to the suffering of others.
We’ve been told that Sheriff Crowder is a kind person who loves dogs. Please contact Sheriff Crowder and politely encourage him to consider alternative fundraising events that do not involve cruelty to animals, and that instead teach children the value of kindness toward people and animals. Remind him that every major animal welfare organization in America, including the A.S.P.C.A. and the Humane Society of the United States, is opposed to rodeo.
