Upcoming Demonstrations

Upcoming Demonstrations
Wal-Mart Fishing Demo

Saturday, July 6, 2002

What: To demonstrate against Wal-Mart's attempt to teach children the inhumane act of catch and release.

Where:Boca Wal-Mart (22100 US Hwy 441)

When:Saturday, July 6 from 10:00am - 11:00am

Why: An increasingly popular form of fishing, where the fish is hooked, "played" to exhaustion, and finally thrown back, is known as catch-and-release. Many of these fish are released maimed and doomed to a slow, painful death. Mortality can result from swallowed hooks, careless handling resulting in broken jaws or internal injuries, and stress or exhaustion- conditions that can lead to death even days after release. A previously-caught fish that does manage to stay alive can be identified by the torn mouth and net marks on the body, wounds that often become infected. Simply removing a fish from water can be harmful. Even the stress caused by pressure and temperature changes from pulling a fish up from deep water can be fatal. Handling a fish, by hand or with a net, removes the outer protective mucous barrier leaving the fish open to infection.

Directions: I-95 N. Take the S.W. 10TH ST. exit, exit number 36C, towards SR-869. Turn LEFT onto SW 10TH ST. Stay straight to go onto FL-869 W (Portions toll). Take the US-441 N exit, exit number 15A. Merge onto FL-7 N/US-441 N.

Swap Shop Demo
Tuesday, July 9, 2002

What:Demonstration t o convince Broward County Commissioners to enact a ban on circuses with animals

Where:In front of City Hall in Fort Lauderdale

When:Tuesday, July 9 @ 1:30pm

Why: At the Fort Lauderdale, FL based Swap Shop, the Hanneford Family Circus forces dogs, cats, a tiger, and three elephants to perform up to three times daily. At the Swap Shop, the animals live miserable lives. When they are not performing, the animals are locked in tiny cages or chained to posts. Circus animals perform unnatural acts like balancing on one foot and jumping through hoops of fire under the threat of punishment. Circus officials will deny it, but the animals are typically trained by being starved or beaten. You will see trainers poking elephants with bullhooks and cracking whips near the animals. These are reminders that they had better perform -- or else!
