Wildlife
Conservation through Compassionate Living
An ARFF Humane Education Presentation
An exploration
of humans, animals and their environments - to encourage a personal
sense of responsibility and compassion towards one another.
A Weekly Reader
study generally confirmed the belief that most children have a
high degree of interest and concern for wild animals. Indeed,
the Weekly Reader study states that wildlife is a subject about
which children may have limited personal knowledge, but often
have strong opinions. It is the job of humane education to help
children develop the critical thinking skills necessary for arriving
at informed opinions. Such a process necessarily involves providing
children with the facts about today's important animal-protection
issues.

The
Weekly Reader National Survey on Wildlife was conducted during
the week of October 31, 1986. The project surveyed nearly
400,000 students in grades two through six nation-wide. Since
the time of this study the importance of conservation and
animal welfare efforts has become even more recognized.

The Animal
Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) is proud to offer Wildlife
Conservation through Compassionate Living, a free educational
workshop geared towards students in elementary school through high school.
ARFF's Humane Education Coordinator, Breelyn MacDonald, will be
traveling to Florida schools as a guest speaker to offer this creative and
educational workshop regarding wildlife issues in both captive
and free-living settings.
Breelyn MacDonald
has an extensive background working with chimpanzees and has a
B.S. in Primate Behavior and Ecology, as well as a B.A. in Anthropology.
She is listed on the Broward County Classroom Speaker's Directory

Through animated
lectures, film clips, and discussion, the

the environment and encourages a personal sense of
responsibility and compassion towards animals.
If you have
any questions or would like to schedule a workshop,
please contact Breelyn at (954) 727-2733, or email arff@animalrightsflorida.org.

Vegetarianism:
A Lifestyle You Can Live With
Since
1993, ARFF has presented its informative vegetarian slide show
to numerous schools and other groups throughout the state of Florida.
The 30-45 minute slide presentation, entitled Vegetarianism: A
Lifestyle You Can Live With, is designed to introduce adults,
middle and high school-age students to the various reasons people
may choose an alternative to a meat-based diet. It's not a cooking
class, but rather a slide show supported talk which discusses
the health, environmental and ethical reasons why approximately
7% of the American population are vegetarians.
The presentation
is not designed to persuade students to become vegetarians, but
rather to provide them with an alternative perspective and promote
critical thinking. Students are urged to do more reading on their
own, talk to their parents, think about their choices and decide
what is best for them.
Handouts are
provided and slides are grade-appropriate. For more information,
or to schedule a speaker to visit your class, please contact the
Animal Rights Foundation of Florida at (954) 917-ARFF
